An open trunk with the words 'watch your head' written below

Some GM vehicles have a rear hatch with a nasty habit of dropping on your head. It's no gentle drop either, owners have been complaining that the gas strut rods can fail allowing the lift-gate to give way to gravity and drop on your head like an apple -- a really, really, heavy apple. Thanks a lot, Newton.

General Motors has said it will fix the lift-gate problem but refuses to call it a recall. Apparently they don't consider it a safety issue. I don't consider their past judgements on "safety issues" to be all that impressive. I guess we're all entitled to our opinions.

So if this isn't a recall, what is it? GM is calling it a "customer satisfaction program N140274 - Lift-gate Strut Rod Detach." Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Makes you feel like they really care.

The issue affects the 2010-15 Cadillac SRX.
